NCAB Conference: Leading parenting expert concerned parents of bullies could be bullying their children

in Press Releases

Media Release - Friday 29 July

Parents may be inadvertently bullying their children if they use confronting and accusing methods to curtail their child’s behaviour, the National Centre Against Bullying Conference was told this week.

Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia’s leading parenting experts, said parents cared deeply about bullying and wanted to end it but could get caught up in the heat of the moment and become bullies themselves.

He said that by creating controlling environments and punishing children, the children were more likely to respond excusing, justifying and denying their actions.

“The value is in working with children” Dr Coulson said.  “The more controlling we become, the bigger the problem can become.”
