A week dedicated to building an eSmart Australia

Promoting smart, safe and responsible use of digital technology

National eSmart Week (2-8 September 2018) is a week of encouraging everyone in the community to be smart, safe and responsible when using digital technology.

Held at the same time as National Child Protection Week, eSmart Week creates awareness, solutions and ideas for community education on issues of cyber safety, bullying and wellbeing, both on and offline.

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation CEO, Lesley Podesta, said this year’s National eSmart Week proves how important it is to Australian communities to protect young people online, explaining that Foundation programs such as eSmart Schools and eSmart Libraries are pivotal in educating people of all ages about cyber safety.

Every day we received stories of children, families, teachers and communities highlighting tips, ideas, activities and information about online safety. These included many different fantastic ideas, in many different settings, such as schools, libraries, sporting teams and community events. Being able to see communities working together to spread the importance of cyber safety is very important to us, and the work everyone put in to this year’s eSmart Week has been phenomenal. This year, more than 1,388 schools, libraries and organisations held events to help build an eSmart Australia.

“The internet is a great place to learn, be creative and stay connected, but with one in five young Australians found to have been cyber bullied each year, it is important that we invest in giving our communities the skills they need to be responsible and safe online.

“The best way to build an eSmart Australia is to engage the whole community. We know that National eSmart Week provides opportunities to promote important themes and messages by running engaging activities for all Australians.

“So much work is put into eSmart by schools, libraries and our staff every day,” Lesley said. “The work everyone puts into making Australians smarter, safer and more responsible online, really does come into focus during National eSmart Week, as we’ve now witnessed over four years.”

National eSmart Week is an initiative developed by the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, in partnership with the Telstra Foundation.
