We are honoured to announce the Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AC, as Patron of the Foundation.
"I am honoured to have been asked to become the Alannah & Madeline Foundation's Tasmanian Patron. As the Governor of Tasmania, representing the people of this island, the tragic circumstances implicit in the Foundation’s name continue to resonate with us; I am therefore all the more keen to use my office to support the Foundation’s work in protecting young teenagers and children from any forms of violence and bullying, whether that be in the school environment, the virtual environment, the community or in domestic circumstances.
"The Foundation has widespread support across Australia, through governments, educational systems, libraries, the private sector and social media. Evidence of the efforts of those who work for and otherwise support the Foundation are told in statistics: with currently some 10,000 children in refuges or foster homes supported each year, 200,000 children registered for their Digital Licence which aims reduce online harm to children and the Better Buddies initiative to reduce bullying operating in 1,728 schools.
"The value of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation also goes beyond statistics. In reminding us all of the tragedy of loss through violence, the Foundation seeks to change behaviours as well as to protect the vulnerable. This less tangible aim will in the longer term save countless numbers of young Australians who otherwise might have been subject to physical and psychological harm."
