"I am honoured to have been asked to become the Alannah & Madeline Foundation's Tasmanian Patron. As the former Governor of Tasmania, representing the people of this island, the tragic circumstances implicit in the Foundation’s name continue to resonate with us.
"The Foundation has widespread support across Australia, through governments, educational systems, libraries, the private sector and social media. Evidence of the efforts of those who work for and otherwise support the Foundation are told in statistics: with currently some 10,000 children in refuges or foster homes supported each year and more than 200,000 children registered for their eSmart Digital Licence which aims reduce online harm to children.
"The value of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation also goes beyond statistics. In reminding us all of the tragedy of loss through violence, the Foundation seeks to change behaviours as well as to protect the vulnerable. This less tangible aim will in the longer term save countless numbers of young Australians who otherwise might have been subject to physical and psychological harm."
