Caitlin's Story

Story four – Caitlin, Alannah & Madeline Foundation Ambassador, Young Leader Tackling Global Inequaity

“I was eleven years old when I started a new school. I was the only new kid in a year group of 65 kids and they did not take to me.

To this day I don’t know why they decided to treat me like an outsider, and worse. I was called names, I was punched in the stomach, things were thrown at me as I rode my bicycle and when I made an effort to join in I was called a stalker. The teachers knew what was going on but they did nothing. They told me to toughen up.

For about 6 months I avoided class and hid in the bathrooms, and often I didn’t turn up and pretended I missed the school bus. I lived down the road – I didn’t even take the bus.

I tried to keep it from my parents as I did not want to concern them or let them down. They found out when I got bad. I became suicidally depressed at 12.

Bullying is a huge issue, with long term effects. It affected my education and social development and was a stage of my life that I don’t want anyone else to go through.

It’s one of the many reasons I am proud to support the Foundation which helps 100,000 of kids who have a similar story.”
