The Alannah and Madeline Foundation’s Better Buddies Framework Application for 2009

Applications are open for the NAB sponsored Better Buddies positions for 2009.

The Better Buddies Framework includes the Teacher Resource and Activity Ideas to easily integrate Better Buddies into your school's existing buddy framework or to introduce a buddy framework into the school.  Better Buddies schools will receive updates, ideas sheets for each of the four key events and other support from The Alannah and Madeline Foundation throughout the year.
A unique feature of Better Buddies is the involvement of local NAB Representatives.

In 2008, more than 200 schools nationally are participating in Better Buddies.  This is thanks to our proud partner NAB and other community supporters.  Following the model established by our inaugural community volunteers from NAB, the community model component of Better Buddies provides a structure for the community to support their local school with their Better Buddies activities.  The Foundation provides ongoing support and information to schools to ensure maximum benefit is obtained from implementing Better Buddies.

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is currently developing a new Better Buddies Framework website. While this site is being developed, please refer to the information below or contact the Foundation’s Prevention Team on email betterbuddies@amf.org.au or phone (03) 9697 0666.

Comments from 2007 Better Buddies Pilot Schools

Children really identify with the concept of caring and looking out for each other through the role model of Buddy Bear.  We have developed a great sense of community with whole school buddy activities involving parents and NAB staff.  All children know that they have a "buddy" either to look out for or who will care for you.  We also have a special "Buddy Bear" area which is decorated and painted which has toys etc and is seen as a safe place to play.  The program also reinforces our own key values of friendliness, respect and success.

It has been important we have had so many fun activities to do with them to make sure we're connecting properly. We have also taught them skills in which they will use when their older and we always made them feel welcome
Grade 5 Boy

Better Buddies has meant a lot to me this year.  I feel it has helped gain my buddies confidence as well as all the other people in this school.  It has helped preps feel secure, calm and happy about their first year at Primary school.
Grade 6 Girl

You can play with, to share with them. You can watch them. They can make you feel safe.
Prep Girl

I have been thrilled by the way my daughter’s buddy has helped her to adjust to school life.
Parent Younger Buddy

It has given my child confidence to attend school, given reason to go everyday, loves her buddies, talks with pride.
Parent Older Buddy

Starting primary school was terrifying for my daughter and having a buddy to help her was great but my daughter did not want her buddies friendship.  She would always cry.  Now my daughter absolutely loves having a buddy and cannot stop talking about her.
