The National Centre Against Bullying (NCAB) is a peak body working to advise and inform the Australian community on the issue of childhood bullying and the creation of safe schools and communities.

Established in 2002, NCAB is an initiative of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation. NCAB is chaired by The Hon. Alastair Nicholson AO, retired Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia.

NCAB aims to:

  1. Provide national leadership in addressing bullying and other negative behaviours and achieve safe and connected environments for young people

  2. Change attitudes about bullying, and related issues, and increase awareness of the harm it causes to individuals and society.

  3. Build the capacity, knowledge and skill base of a range of sectors to enable them to address the issues of bullying and wellbeing

  4. Drive evidence-based practice in the fields of bullying and wellbeing.

Based on  the Kandersteg Declaration against Bullying in Children and Youth 2007 – “long term commitment and determination to promote healthy relationships and prevent bullying and victimization in children and youth”, NCAB’s role has been broadened to include safety and wellbeing in the school and community.

The third bi-ennial NCAB Conference is being held on 3 – 4 November 2007 at Hilton on the Park, Melbourne.  The theme of the conference is “Promoting positive relationships for safer school communities” and includes key presenters from the USA, Finland and Singapore and delegates from Australia, Japan, Denmark and New Zealand.  The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST), the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD), VicHealth and NAB are sponsoring the conference.

In order to meet the growing need to address bullying in our community, the National Coalition Against Bullying has been renamed effective 3 November 2007 as the National Centre Against Bullying.

The Centre will be a hub for community information focusing on three key areas to reduce the incidence and effects of bullying and increase the safety and wellbeing of our children:

  1. Research
  2. Information and resources
  3. Advocacy and awareness
