The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is strongly committed to protecting the privacy of your personal information. We are subject to the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), including the Australian Privacy Principles contained in the Act.

What is personal information

'Personal information' is any information or opinion about an identified individual or an individual who is reasonably identifiable, regardless of whether the information or opinion is true or not or whether it is recorded in a material form or not.

'Sensitive information' is a subset of personal information that is given a higher level of protection because of its sensitive nature. It includes health information, as well as personal information that is about an individual's:

  •  racial or ethic origin
  • political opinions
  •  membership of a political association, a professional or trade association, or trade union
  •  religious beliefs or affiliations
  •  philosophical beliefs
  • sexual orientation or practices, or
  • criminal record

Collection of information

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation may collect your personal information when you interact with us in person, via the telephone, email or via our online forms.

What personal information do we collect?

We may collect and store your personal information such as your name, email address, phone number, address, credit card or bank account details, and donation history. If you are applying to work or volunteer with the Foundation we may require additional information such as your work history, qualifications, criminal record check and/or Working With Children check.

Without this personal information, we may be unable to process your donation, verify legitimate enquiries, send you a receipt or offer you employment/volunteer opportunities.

Where lawful and practical, you may communicate with the Foundation via a pseudonym. However this may impact on the Foundation's ability to respond to any enquiry you may make.

What do we do with your personal information?

Your personal information is held and used to:

  • Process donations that you may make to the Foundation;Contact you about the Foundation from time to time, including by sending you newsletters (via post or email) or telephone calls
  • Process any application you make for employment or volunteering opportunities.

Once we no longer need your personal information it will be securely destroyed.

Disclosure of your personal information

We may disclose your personal information to:

  • Third party service providers who work with us or provide services to us;
  • Other organisations which partner with us to help our cause; and
  • Your financial institution if required for direct debit or credit card transactions

Change of contact details

The Foundation takes reasonable steps to ensure that the personal information it collects about you is accurate, up-to-date and complete, and also when using and disclosing it, that it is relevant for the purposes of the use or disclosure. If we are satisfied that any of the information should be corrected we will also take reasonable steps to correct that information.

Help us to keep your personal information up to date by advising us of change of address, phone number, email address, or if you otherwise believe that the personal information that we hold about you is inaccurate, incomplete, out-of-date, irrelevant or misleading, by contacting the person who collected your information or our Privacy Officer on the details below.

If we do not agree that your information needs correcting, we will give you written notice of our decision, including our reasons and how to complain if you are not satisfied with our decision. You can also ask us to associate a statement with the personal information which explains that you believe it is incorrect.

You will not be charged for making a correction request or requesting us to associate a statement with your information.

Opting out of direct marketing

If you no longer wish to hear about the Foundation from us or other organisations which partner with us to help our cause, you can opt out at any time by contacting our Privacy Officer on the details below or by following the instructions in the communication you receive.

Keeping your information safe

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation takes your privacy seriously. We have security measures in place to protect your information stored by physical and electronic means. This includes the secure storage of any electronic documents within Australia and storage of paper files in secure locations such as locked filing cabinets.

Access to your personal information

You can apply to access the personal information held by the Foundation about you. To do this, please contact our Privacy Officer on the details below.

We will respond to your request promptly, but may need to verify your identity before providing access to your information.

We will generally provide access where a request is made, unless a relevant exception under the Privacy Act applies, such as where giving access would have an unreasonable impact on the privacy of others, or where we are required or authorised by law to deny access. If we refuse your request, we will give you written notice of our decision, including our reasons and how to complain if you are not satisfied with our decision.

Protecting the privacy of the children we assist

The Alannah and Madeline Foundation's mission is keeping children safe from violence. The privacy of the children we assist is of the upmost importance. Information may be collected for the purpose of providing counselling or other services to children, in line with this mission. The Foundation will only disclose personal information of children if it is part of providing this service or if there is a legal obligation. Where practicable, we will obtain consent prior to the disclosure of information.

All names in our case studies have been changed to protect privacy.

Children pictured on our website and collateral are either models or have given consent.

Changes to this privacy policy

The Foundation may, from time to time, update or change this privacy policy to ensure that it reflects the acts and practices of our organisation as well as any changes in the law. Any changes will take effect from the time that they are posted on our website at
