As a major Australian bank, we understand that we have a responsibility to face into the issues that impact the health and safety of our communities. Tackling important social issues such as bullying is everyone's responsibility and by managing the issue, rather than pretending it doesn't exist, we look to turn the table on negative behaviours which we know have lasting impacts on the lives of many Australians.
At NAB, we know that bullying is a major issue and polling we conducted this year shows the extent of the problem; close to 80 per cent of people surveyed indicated they had experienced some form of bullying.
Since 2003, NAB has been a proud supporter of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation through the sponsorship and support of several programs.
Our key focus with The Foundation is based around the Better Buddies Framework. Relaunched into primary schools by The Foundation in 2007, Better Buddies is now operating in over 600 schools across Australia. We currently have over 250 local NAB staff actively involved in bringing the program to life and we are committed to helping The Foundation implement the program in all primary schools across Australia in the years to come.
In February 2010, NAB and The Alannah and Madeline Foundation launched Australia's first ever National Buddy Week. The initiative was developed to highlight the importance of friendships and the need to prevent bullying in Australian communities. While one of our key objectives was to create awareness for The Foundation, sets of Buddy Bands were also sold through NAB branches with proceeds going to support the AMF's bullying prevention programs in Australian schools.
Not only does bullying pervade our schools but also online and in the workplace which is why it is important for us to take action in all areas, not just schools.
In cyber space, we have provided support to the recently announced eSmart initiative.
And in the workplace, we work hard to ensure we provide a healthy and safe work environment where every employee and customer is treated with respect and dignity, and where positive working relationships are promoted through our Code of Conduct Behavioural Guidelines.
Individually, or the way organisations such as NAB operate collectively, we can all make a positive impact through our behaviours.
As such, it is incumbent on all of us to take action against issues such as bullying. Whether as individuals, or as a large corporate such as NAB, the way in which we choose to model our behaviours towards each other can all help create more positive, caring and inclusive communities.
