We are excited to announce a new initiative of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, Children365, encouraging people from across Australia to celebrate children every day of the year.
Children365 is one of the many ways The Alannah and Madeline Foundation advocates for the wellbeing of children. This initiative encourages adults to take the time to think about why the children in their lives are important and how they can spend time together. Through an annual calendar and a range of activities, Children365 gives people practical ways they can engage positively with children. Make sure you register for your monthly updates and activities.
"Children are our future and as a nation, we need to create the best possible opportunities for them. Their safety, protection and wellbeing should be fundamental to everything that we do."
Dr Judith Slocombe, CEO of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation
"Children365 is a spark of brilliance. I am already inspired to spend more time with my grandchildren. With the pace of life, the pressure to pay the mortgage and to do what you have to do, kids in many cases get lost in it all. It's something that more parents of young kids are looking for, creative things to do with kids. My grandson and I are going to explore the outdoors."
John Bertrand AM, Chairman of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation
To help us all find everyday ways to celebrate children, The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is releasing a unique 14-month calendar to inspire people with ideas for great ways to spend time with the children in their lives. Each month will have a theme around activities families can enjoy their their children.
The calendar is available through National Pharmacies in Victoria or download the calendar now.
Through Children365 adults are encouraged to make promises and declarations about their children for the year ahead.
To show their support for Children365 celebrities and high profile Australian are releasing their own 365 statements about their children.
Children365 was launched by the Victorian Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development, The Hon Maxine Morand, on Sunday 1 November 2009, at a family day at Melbourne Museum. The launch was held on the last day of Children's Week, signifying the end of a week of celebrating children and the commitment to cherish and protect our children every day of the year.
At the Family Fun Day children and their families enjoyed free activities including kite, shield and puppet making workshops; fun with children's book authors Andy Griffiths, Sally Rippen and Felice Arena as well as Go For Your Life and Auskick activities with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation Ambassadors Giann Rooney and Dipper. Children were also able to get creative with food through Rangoli, they had fun with Minmi the Dinosaur and Buddy Bear, explored technology through e-learning activities and were entertained by Joining the Chorus.
Thank you to the Melbourne Museum for supporting Children365 by generously extending its free entry policy for children to adults on the day, to The Victorian State Government for hosting the event, and to everyone involved who made it such a wonderful and enjoyable day.
Children365 supports the work of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation to ensure children are protected and cared for, and that violence—including abuse and neglect against children is not tolerated in our community.
The concept was developed after the tragic death of Darcey Freeman. Following the loss of their precious little girl, Darcey's mother and her family suggested an annual day to cherish all children. They asked The Alannah and Madeline Foundation to help make it a reality.
"The Alannah and Madeline Foundation has been a wonderful help to our family during the very trying and difficult period following Darcey's death. We continue to experience assistance from the Foundation in many and different ways. We are extremely supportive of Children365 and would love to see it evolve over time so that children from all families are loved and cared for. Children's Week is an event that all families should naturally embrace and Children365 is a wonderful adjunct to that. Celebrating children should continue forever."
Tim Barnes, Darcey's uncle and spokesperson from her family
