Olive Gully receives the cheque
from The Alannah and Madeline Foundation
The Alannah and Madeline Foundation today presented the widow
of murdered security guard Jason Gully with a cheque for $25,312
– the proceeds of its Gully Family Appeal.
The Appeal, which was run by the Foundation during December
last year for Mr Gully’s widow, Olive, and their infant son
Lae, attracted donations from more than 170 individuals and
organisations across Victoria.
The Alannah and Madeline Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer
Andrew Chappell said the Foundation offered to host the Gully
Family Appeal because its core mission is to help children who
have experienced sudden family loss.
“The Foundation provides support for children who have lost
a family member suddenly or who have been victims of violent
crime,” Mr Chappell said.
“In Lae Gully’s case, he has tragically lost his father through
violent circumstances and we wanted to ensure that his future
was a little brighter.”
“We hope that the monies raised will ease some of the financial
burden that has been placed on his family by his father’s untimely
death.”
Mr Chappell said the response from the Victorian public had
been heartwarming, with donations ranging from $5 to $10,000.
“Many people who phoned us were touched by the news of Mr Gully’s
death and were keen to help his widow and son, even if they
could only make a small donation,” Mr Chappell said.
Mr Chappell said the Foundation had also offered to assist
the Gully family until Lae reaches 20 years of age.
“In the longer term, we can offer Olive Gully practical assistance
with the rearing of Lae, such as help with school books and
uniforms,” Mr Chappell said.
The Keysborough Club where Mr Gully worked also held a fundraiser
for the Gully Family, which raised a total of $21,136.
